URL Rewriting Tools: Is shorter better?

As web users we are all familiar with the extensively lengthy URLs (Uniform Resource Locators)/weblinks that sometimes resemble some sort of code, oftentimes they include a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols in no clearly discernible order. These are referred to as Dynamic URLs. And we are even more familiar with the more appealing, short, easy-to-memorize URLs that we can't deny are less of a headache to even look at. These are Static URLs.

Dynamic URLs are URLs which are a result of searching a database-driven website (like the URLs for your Google search results) or they are the URLs of a website running a script (Dynamic sites) in response to a query that has been made on a website, they hence, are a template to display the results of the query. They are linked to websites that are easy to change at any point in time, in case new information reaches the webmaster.

Static URLs on the other hand, are those whose information is constant until changes are hard-coded into the HTML.

Dynamic URLs vs Static URLs: Search Engine Optimization.

Dynamic URLs are less friendly to search engines, and are, as a result, less likely to appear on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). They are hardly indexed on these SERPs and even when they do, they are arranged with a clear preference to the Static URLs. This is because search engines are generally programmed to exhibit a preference towards pages that are unique and they also programmed to truncate URL indexes after a certain number of symbols (this reduces the uniqueness of Dynamic URLs from a similar domain and removes keywords in the URL so that they cannot appear to be useful to provide the results the end-user is searching for). Static URLs are, therefore, more optimized for search engines, and the preference in indexing will automatically translate to better traffic.

URL Rewriting Tools: What are they? Why should I consider them?

URL Rewriting Tools are web tools that are used to convert URLs from one form to another. They are more than often used to convert dynamic URLs to static URLs, to give these links that SEO advantage. These modules usually just make a URL that replaces the dynamic URL based on a complex algorithm, there is a type however that redirects to the dynamic URL. Either process is programmed such that it saves time and money. It's a quick way to get your pages indexed as the static URL can be made to contain a keyword or two to even further improve SEO.

Other Qualities of the URL Types to Consider

  • Static URLs are less cost-intensive to set up and maintain in comparison to Dynamic URLs. Added to their SEO advantage they are good for growing web domains. They, however, require a lot more information and technology knowhow to operate. They also can only provide basic information, their long term functionality is not that high.
  • Dynamic URLs might be more expensive to set up and maintain but they are easier to use and operate. They are even easier for the end-user. They display maximum functionality as a web link. The major drawback is poor Search Engine Optimization.

For search engine optimization (SEO), you should consider converting your dynamic URLs to Static URLs. You should also be technically equipped to change the content of the linked web page.
